A "Not Quite New Year" Story!

Folklore researcher and PhD candidate Hank Caldwell has a problem. He’s come to Japan to get information for his book on supernatural creatures called yokai. Along the way he discovers that yokai are not only real, but one of them is determined to make Hank his forever lover.

Translator Daisuke Tachibana knows all about the shadowy figure in a business suit who keeps accosting Mr. Caldwell. He knows the creature must be stopped, but how? Their upcoming research trip to a remote, hot springs resort will be exactly the opening the yokai is looking for. Now if only Tachibana could stop thinking about Mr. Caldwell’s naked, freckled body submerged in steaming water long enough to formulate a plan to keep the amorous creature at bay.

Nicole Kimberling always manages to capture my heart with her writing and this story was no exception. Another reviewer described the plot in great details including what I consider to be a major SPOILER of the novella, so I will not go into plot. I will just say that I really loved her humour, I like that her writing is always so understated, it feels as writer does not feel a need to be overly descriptive, flowery, I guess, and still captures the essense of the characters and storyline. I found both guys to be very enjoyable and their quiet (and sometimes not so quiet LOL) chemistry was to my taste.

Oh and yes, I learned a lot about different japanese spirits from this novella. I always like when writer does her research well.

The Red Thread of Forever Love edition by Nicole Kimberling Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This was quite the entertaining read! The cover immediately caught my eye, and after reading a few positive reviews, I finally bought this one yesterday. (really, though, isn't the cover amazing?)

The Japanese setting seems as if the author did her homework (I'm no expert and have never been myself), nicely detailed and informative without overwhelming. I wasn't sure what to expect from the yokai, but 'Fingers' definately stole every scene he was in! Hands down, my favorite character. The karoake scene alone was worth the price of the book! (well, that and how poor Hank kept overhearing people wondering if his curtains matched his carpet! *snerks*)
After so many M/Ms it is great to find one with such an original and delightful plot with quite a few laughs to keep me highly entertained. This writer shows us her rich world building skills in Turnskin. In her latest, Nicole Kimberling again demonstrates her amazing creativity and imagination. Like Sirius says, there is good research done. Using Japanese folklore and beliefs the plot is highly entertaining, original and humorous as one Canadian professor goes visiting Japanese towns known for it folklore of ancient devils, a seemingly demure but attractive Daisuke serving as guardian/translator by his side. The professor's very foundation is shaken when he is pursued by one love struck gay "yokai" (demon), whom he named "Fingers". Both Hank and Daisuke are appealing characters especially the seemingly stoic Daisuke. "Fingers" himself is adorable. For those of us MM fan who want plot and less sex, this is the one for you. A unique plot with a cute romance.
This is a cute story that immerses the reader in Japanese culture, specifically folklore. While I enjoyed the historical elements, the romance, and the plot, I had a hard time really sinking into the story. Everything was good, but I never deeply associated with any of the characters, which left me pleased but not completely satisfied.

While this story starts slow in order to develop the culture and character relationship, the end picks up, culminating in their relationship and a dramatic turn of plot. The pacing was a bit of a struggle in the beginning, but a necessary evil and definitely worth muddling through.

This is one of those stories that I enjoyed but never wow'd me, leaving me with very little to say. It could be that it just wasn't up my alley, or not relating to the characters kind of ruined it. Nonetheless, I would recommend this story to others, especially those interested in Japanese folklore, who like a little bit of humor, and who are looking for something serious but not too heavy. It's an interesting mix of cultures, characters, and rhythms. And if Fingers annoys you in the beginning, he'll probably grow on you by the end! )
In the past I have thoroughly enjoyed Nicole Kimberling's Bellingham Mysteries series, so I was extremely excited to see she had a new book out. While the premise of The Red Thread of Forever Love is original, creative and humorous; unfortunately the protagonists Daisuke Tachibana and Hank Caldwell failed to resonate with this reader.

Pros The best part of the novel, hands down, is the character of "Fingers," Daisuke's alter ego. This manifestation from Daisuke's inner desires comes in the form of a spirit called a yokai, who follows Hank around as he is researching folklore legends in Japan. "Fingers" wants in Hank's pants something fierce and some of the best dialog is "Fingers" trying to seduce/grope/molest poor Hank in public places. In my opinion, "Fingers" totally stole the show in this novel.

Cons While I found "Fingers" charming, I did not feel like I really understood Hank, nor did his character seem truly attracted to Daisuke, the love interest. While a lot of time was spent exploring the folklore legends of Japan, Ms. Kimberling didn't delve deeply enough into the two main characters personal lives as I might have wished. Whereas I did feel I had a better understanding of Daisuke's motivations, Hank perplexed me and perhaps that is why I cannot give the book more than three divas.

Despite the fact that I cannot whole heartedly recommend The Red Thread of Forever Love, unless you desperately love reading about quirky Japanese spirits, I would continue to recommend Ms. Kimberling as an author whose novels are worth buying. Three stars.

Dark Divas Reviews
I love Nicole's books so much! always smart and funny and refreshing! and the romance so sweet! In this particular one, we get a glimpse of Japan and Japanese folklore. It's interesting how people always find some form of expressing their inner desires, or just their inner selves, when their surroundings prevent it. I liked the way we slowly get to know the MCs, and Fingers was simply adorable.
