I recently read this book and couldn't put it down. This is an interesting story of a family that goes through some turbulent times and rebounds but focusing on family, and those things in life that matter the most. They turn negativity into positive vibes by enjoying our country, its people and the food they encounter along the journey. I would highly recommend this book especially if you are planning to travel around the United States.
Fun book to read that was hard to put down. Loved the adventure that Mimi's family took. So many great memories and life lessons she gave to her young kids. I envy her spirit and courage to make the "coast to coast" round trip in such an old vehicle. Her conversational writing style was so easy to read and it felt like a good friend was sitting next to me telling about her adventure. Many laughs throughout the book. I was totally craving donuts after the read!
What a delightful read with vivid descriptions that truly make you feel as though you are participating right along with the family. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering a life style change and feels as though they are perhaps stuck in a rut. It is hard to put down because you want to know what is next in this adventure. It certainly helps you rediscover what is truly important in life.
A fascinating and funny story about a family that turned the lemons life gave them into lemonade - served with great donuts, hot dogs, and tacos along the way, as they see the USA in an old VW bus.. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and got great insights into the struggles of an American family trying to keep their heads above water during the economic crisis. It was hard to put down, as I wanted to know what their next adventure would be. I'm looking forward to a sequel!
This is a delightful book. It is informative, entertaining, and uplifting. It shows how the recession brought devastation to one family and how that family lifted itself up in order to survive. Seeking a more simple life, the family travels the US in an old VW van that is constantly breaking down. Amidst their travel problems, the family encounters many interesting people, places, and occurrences. A highlight is discovering the many famous (and small) food spots that dot our roads and towns. The reader will learn a great deal about the geographical sites in their travels and how living in a simple way can be fulfilling. Writing in a humorous tone and loving way, the author makes one feel a part of their journey.
What fun! Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Wonderful mix of humor and angst! Could absolutely relate to so many of Mimi's experiences from the housing bust to traveling with husband and kids...albeit we didn't do it in a VW camper bus! Get this book, count your blessings, and learn to "live each moment to fullest wherever and whenever that may be." Thank you for a wonderful read, Mimi!
My perspective comes from knowing the writer and about this trip prior to reading the book, so take that for what it is worth. That being said, I still learned some new things that I didn't know beforehand - in particular, what happens to the author outside of the VW repair shop in LA, which was classic. All in all it was a fun and interesting look at a family's VW bus trip around the country with very interesting descriptions of things to consider when taking on a trip of this magnitude. I thought the author's descriptions of settings and characters were informative and charming without being pretentious. My co-workers are enjoying the book as well as they have heard me mention some of their adventures and wanted to read about it themselves.
My only issue with the book would be the sub-title regarding the search for simplicity in a changing world. I can't think of too much in the book that I would describe as searching for simplicity. If anything, the opposite would be more accurate. A more suitable sub-title would have had something to do with their experiences sampling local eating establishments along the way or something along those lines.
